So ... they're back again!
If you follow me you'll know that after watching No Mercy (yet another cut throat kpop idol survival show) I wasn't particularly pleased with the line up of this group. I still feel a bitterness that certain members made it when other former members didn't but there's nothing I can do about it so I'm going to let it go in order to enjoy the music.
I wouldn't say I particularly stan Monsta X. I have my favourite members but that's really as far as it goes. The only thing I do is listen to their music when it comes out and I have to say that this album is considerably better than the first one. I like the title track for starters! I wasn't so keen on their debut song.
The album only has 6 songs so I'm just gonna give a very brief, first listen album review to let you know what I think.
1. Rush
Ever since Jason Derulo's Talk Dirty To Me, I've hated that whole 'let's have brass instruments on the track' movement. Kpop got a hold of it, late as usual, and ran with it. The problem is they wont.stop.running. EXID used it excessively, UNIQ used it, even BTS used it and Monsta X used it on this track. Surprisingly, it didn't affect the song too badly. I really like this song and I don't know why because it isn't my type of song at all. My favourite part is I.M's rap (the second rap verse), he seems to just have a way with it.
2. Hero
More brass instruments again but this time I just didn't have the tolerance for it. I listened to it though because I wanted to hear I.M's verse.
At some point in the song there was a whole breakdown where all that could be heard was the flippin trumpet and I thought I would pull my hair out. No shade to the boys but its a no from me.
3. Perfect Girl
Love love LOVE this. Perfect slow jam type of song that suits the vocal line well. I love when Monsta X does slow songs because Kihyun really shines! I can't really distinguish between the singers voices, I only recognise Kihyun and Shownu's but I hope that Wonho got a lot more lines that he did on the last album because I loved his voice on No Mercy.
4. Amen
This reminds me of a 2005 era summer R&B track for some reason. One of my favourite songs on the album and probably the one I'll play the most. This was the first time I've favoured the vocal parts over the rap.
5. Gone Bad
*sigh*
The only part I liked was the vocal part before the chorus.
... that's really all I have to say.
6. Broken Heart
This is the first ballad type track I've heard from them and I really liked it. I even caught Wonho's voice on this so I'm happy!
Personally for me, Shownu got way too many lines. His voice isn't my favourite on this song, his voice suits more generic R&B type songs like Blue Moon from their last album.
My opinions are based off my first listen and knowing me, I'll probably change my mind about some parts later down the line. But for now I'll give the album a 3/5 because I like more songs that I disliked and thats an achievement in itself.
Listen to the tracks and let me know what you think!
